Successful Preliminary Usability Testing of the LimbTeq Energy Expenditure Monitor for Amputees

Barron Associates’ LimbTeq system is an accurate, low-profile, and convenient metabolic energy expenditure and physical activity monitor that is compatible with lower limb prostheses. The LimbTeq system collects these data through custom electronic sensors embedded within the prosthetic liner, and provides real-time user feedback via a wireless handheld touchscreen device. Such feedback will be helpful to the user to establish daily activity goals, and additionally provides a means of metabolic and kinematic data sharing with healthcare personnel (e.g., for use in assessing both physical and mental health). Barron Associates recently led initial usability testing of the system with eight lower limb amputee patients. All participants responded that the liner containing the LimbTeq sensors was comfortable to wear; the majority thought the system had potential for making exercise and therapy more interesting.  The team is preparing for more extensive testing.
